In a significant move for animal welfare, Madhubala, the last surviving female elephant at Karachi Zoological Garden, was transferred to Safari Park on Tuesday. This relocation aims to provide Madhubala with a more natural, enriching environment and the chance to reunite with her long-lost sisters, Sonia and Malika, after over 15 years of separation. The Relocation Process of Madhubala
Madhubala’s journey began when she voluntarily entered the transport crate, marking the first step in a complex operation. Using a crane, the FOUR PAWS team carefully lifted and secured her onto a truck for the journey to Safari Park. Dr. Amir Khalil led the mission, along with a dedicated team of experts, including veterinarians Dr. Marina Ivanova and Dr. Frank Göritz, animal trainer Velizar Angelov, and field mission coordinator Pia Einheimler.
A New Hope for Madhubala and Her Sisters
This relocation aims to end the captivity of elephants in Pakistani zoos and allow Madhubala to interact with her siblings, Sonia and Malika, who were brought to Pakistan in 2009. After their arrival, the elephants were split, with Sonia and Malika moved to Safari Park and Madhubala and Noor Jehan remaining at Karachi Zoo. Tragically, Noor Jehan passed away over a year ago, leaving Madhubala to endure loneliness.
In an emotional statement, Dr. Khalil shared his hope for the future: “After such a long separation, we will allow Madhubala to gradually adapt to her new surroundings, starting with audio and olfactory interactions with Sonia and Malika. Our goal is to facilitate their eventual socialization.” Experts are optimistic that Madhubala will remember her siblings and that the new environment will significantly improve her physical and mental well-being.
Medical Care and Rehabilitation
The move follows a recent veterinary assessment, highlighting Madhubala’s need for proper medical care, including dental surgery and dietary improvements. The relocation also marks the end of the elephants’ confinement in zoos, as FOUR PAWS has worked tirelessly to ensure their well-being.
