Punjab Extends Section 144 for 3 Days Amid PTI Protests

Punjab Government Extends Section 144 for Three More Days Amid PTI Protest
LAHORE: In response to the ongoing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests in Islamabad, the Punjab government has extended the imposition of Section 144 across the province for an additional three days. The move aims to maintain law and order and address security concerns.
As per the official notification, the restrictions will remain in place from November 26 to November 28, ensuring public safety and the protection of both human life and property.
The notification further outlines the decision to extend the security measures in light of potential risks associated with large public gatherings. Authorities have expressed concerns over the possibility of these gatherings becoming targets for terrorist attacks or other disturbances.
Strict Prohibition of Political Gatherings and Protests
Under the extended Section 144, all forms of political protests, sit-ins, rallies, or similar activities are strictly prohibited across the province. A government spokesperson reiterated the importance of these measures, emphasizing the need to safeguard citizens and maintain peace in the face of mounting tensions.
The Home Department has formally communicated the restrictions, urging all citizens to comply and avoid participating in unauthorized public gatherings. These preventive measures have been implemented to avoid escalating violence, which could further endanger public safety.
FIR Filed Against PTI Leaders and Supporters in Faisalabad
On November 25, a case was registered against Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, and 45 of his supporters at the Ghulam Mehmoodabad Police Station in Faisalabad. The FIR, filed by Sub-Inspector Ashfaq, includes 13 charges, ranging from terrorism to vandalism and destruction of public property.
The case also mentions the resistance put up by PTI protesters against the police, as well as their involvement in anti-government protests. The police report alleges that PTI supporters clashed with officers and attempted to damage police vehicles using sticks. As a result, 35 protesters were arrested, with several others managing to escape.
Investigations Ongoing
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are underway concerning the clashes that occurred across various parts of the country on November 24. Violent altercations erupted as PTI supporters, acting on the call of their leader Imran Khan, tried to dismantle containers placed by the government to block roads.
With the protests continuing, the situation remains tense, and the Punjab government has stressed the importance of remaining vigilant during this period to prevent further unrest.
