Here’s the complete package with that headline as the lead.

The N45.2 Billion Credit Scheme Nigerians Are Racing to Join

Nigeria’s federal government has disbursed N45.2 billion in consumer credit to more than 300,000 Nigerians so far this year and demand is far outstripping what’s available. When applications opened, more than 1.6 million expressions of interest came in for a program currently serving a fifth of that number.

What CREDICORP actually is

The Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation, or CREDICORP, isn’t a bank and doesn’t lend money directly. It acts as a backstop guaranteeing and capitalizing loans made by commercial banks, fintechs and microfinance lenders, so they’re willing to extend credit to civil servants and informal workers who’d normally be shut out. It’s closer to a government co-signer operating at national scale than a traditional lender.

The corporation’s H2 2026 outlook, released this week, confirms the N45.2 billion figure and sets a new target: 500,000 beneficiaries by the end of the year.

Why people are racing for it

The credit covers exactly the things most people struggle to finance in one lump sum cars, phones, solar panels, school fees, household appliances. CREDICORP CEO Uzoma Nwagba has framed the gap plainly: business loans are familiar in Nigeria, but personal consumer credit barely exists, which leaves most people paying cash upfront or going without.

Vice President Kashim Shettima put it more pointedly at the program’s board inauguration a civil servant shouldn’t have to save for ten years to buy a vehicle, and a young professional shouldn’t sit without power because solar has to be paid for all at once. The government’s stated goal is consumer credit access for at least half of Nigeria’s working population by 2030.

The math behind the rush

Here’s what explains the scramble: 1.6 million people applied. Roughly 300,000 have been reached. That’s not a program with room to spare it’s a program running well below the demand it uncovered the moment it opened applications. For anyone considering applying, the practical takeaway is that acting early in each new phase matters, since previous rounds have filled well short of total interest.

How to apply

CREDICORP works through partner financial institutions rather than direct applications to government. Interested Nigerians can register interest through the CREDICORP website or through partner lenders such as Credit Direct and other participating banks and microfinance institutions, which handle the loan disbursement itself.

Why this is being watched beyond Nigeria

Strip away the local details and this is a live test of something economists elsewhere debate constantly: can a government manufacture a consumer credit market from nothing, rather than waiting for private banks to build one organically? Nigeria’s model government as guarantor riding alongside private lenders, not replacing them resembles how mortgage-backed lending works in the US more than it resembles a direct handout program.

The real test hasn’t arrived yet. A credit program scaled this fast, largely untested through an economic downturn, is the kind of system that looks strong during growth and gets stress-tested when conditions turn. Nigeria is betting it holds. The next few years, not this announcement, will settle that.
