Ford Motor Co. is recalling more than half a million Broncos due to a wiring harness defect that can short circuit and increase the risk of engine fires, the automaker said Thursday.
The recall covers 565,691 Ford Broncos and Bronco Raptors from the 2021 to 2026 model years. Ford estimates roughly 1% of those vehicles actually have the defect, and said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to the issue so far.
The problem stems from insufficient protection on the engine compartment wiring harness, which can leave wires exposed and prone to short-circuiting, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In the event of a short, drivers may notice smoke coming from the air vents or a warning message on the dashboard, followed by flames from the passenger’s side of the engine compartment.
Ford dealers will install new protective sheathing over the wiring at no cost to owners. Owners are expected to receive notification letters by mail after August 24, but can contact Ford directly in the meantime at 866-436-7332. The recall’s internal reference number is 26S55.
